Nothing says "celebration" like the perfect cake

A cake makes a great centerpiece for any party.  Whether it's a birthday bash, a baby shower, or a going away party, the right cake can help mark the occasion and make it memorable for everyone.  Recently, the success of the hilarious blog Cakewrecks has spurred both a growing interest in cake decorating and a fear of producing a "wrecktastic" monstrosity.  If the thought of picking up that icing gun has you quaking in your apron, relax and check out some of the helpful guides under "Official Websites".  On the other hand, if you're an experienced decorator, visit some of the photo links at the bottom of this topic to gather inspiration.

Thanks, Nan! My mom used to bake the cutest cakes when I was a kid. It's amazing the art that can be created with frosting!

Great site, Raven! I used to do cakes for the kids' birthdays years ago, and this brought back memories.

Quick facts

  • The tradition of serving wedding cakes dates back to the Roman Empire, although icing had not yet been invented.
  • Birthday cakes started with a German tradition of baking sweetened bread in the shape of baby Jesus in order to celebrate his birth.  The custom was later adapted to Kinderfest, which is the celebration of a child's birthday.
  • Cakes are traditionally round because the ancient Greeks baked cakes as offerings for Artemis, the goddess of the moon.  They placed lit candles on the cakes so that they would glow like the moon.

Thanksgiving Cake

Two layer 10 inch yellow cake with buttercream icing. Tried a chocolate collar and didn't do that great =/ Happy Thanksgiving was written in two-tone icing to try and match the Indian's belt and hair tie. I loved my figures though =] Should have done a ribbon or something, but ran out of time before the guests came =[
