How to decorate a pumpkin cake

Delight both children and adults with a brightly decorated pumpkin cake for your Halloween party. This recipe is one that you can adapt to everyone's taste because it does not include using or cooking pumpkin. It is the shape of the cake, the coloring and the decorating effects that you use that make it unique for the occasion.

Children will love helping with this activity because they can mix in the colors and lick out the cake and icing bowls.

Instructions

Step 1

Prepare the cake

You can use any flavor cake mix for the main part of the cake. Prepare the batter according to the directions on the package and bake in a 12-inch fluted tube pan. Let the cake cool for ten minutes and then invert it on a wire rack. Remove the pan and let the cake cool completely.

Step 2

Make the icing

While the cake is cooling, combine one package of cream cheese and 1/4 cup of soft butter in a bowl. Beat on medium speed until they are well blended. Gradually add in the icing sugar, beating well after each addition.

Step 3

Make the icing for the stump

Remove 1/2 of the icing from the bowl. Add a few drops of green coloring and stir until it is well blended. Spread half of the green icing on an ice cream cone and set aside. Keep the rest of the green icing for later use.

Step 4

Make the orange icing

Add a few drops of red and yellow food coloring to the icing remaining in the bowl. Blend them together to make orange icing. Spread this on the cake.

Step 5

Finish decorating the cake

Invert the ice cream cone into the hole in the center of the cake. Pipe lines of green icing down the sides of the cake.

Things Needed

1 12-inch tube pan

1 cake mix - any flavor

1 pkg. cream cheese

1/4 cup butter, softened

4 cups of icing sugar

food coloring - red, yellow and green

1 flat bottomed ice cream cone

Tips & Warnings

The directions on the cake mix package will tell you how long you must bake the cake.

Let the cake cool completely before you start the decorating.

If you do not have cream cheese available, you can make your regular icing and add the food coloring.

Ready mixed icing that you purchase at the supermarket is not good for adding food coloring because it is so thick that the colors do not blend well.
