Whether you need to frost a cake and have no powdered sugar in the house, or are looking for a powdered sugar-free recipe for health reasons, you can mix up an easy, tasty frosting without confectioner's sugar.

Follow the steps below to prepare delectable alternative frostings: Powdered Milk Frosting and Cream Cheese Frosting.

Instructions
Step 1
Powdered Milk Frosting

Cream 1/4 cup softened butter and 1/4 cup honey (or maple syrup).  Beat in 2 T. milk (or cream) and 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract. Add 2/3 to 1 cup instant dry milk powder (or 1/2 cup non-instant) and beat until light and fluffy.  Add more liquid if needed.

Step 2
Carob Powdered Milk Frosting

For a chocolaty version of the Powdered Milk Frosting, use 2/3 cup of instant dry milk powder or 1/3 to 1/2 cup non-instant dry milk powder.  Add 1/4 cup of sifted, unsweetened carob powder before adding the dry milk powder.

Step 3
Cream Cheese Frosting

Beat 8 oz. softened cream cheese (low fat, if desired) and 8 T. softened butter until light and fluffy.  Beat in 2 to 4 T. honey to taste.  Add 1 teaspoon vanilla.  Add 1/2 cup chopped nuts, if desired.

Step 4
Fruited Cream Cheese Frosting

For spectacular color and heightened taste, add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of unsweetened crushed raspberries, blueberries or strawberries to the cream cheese frosting.  Whole or sliced fresh berries may be used for decoration.
