How to make ice cream in a plastic bag

Ice cream... easy to make, inexpensive and no ice cream maker required.

“I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!”

Nothing tastes better than ice cream on a hot day, unless it’s homemade ice cream.  If you think it’s a lot of work to make homemade ice cream, particularly those of you who have memories of cranking the old-fashioned ice cream maker, there is an easier way to do it now.  No ice cream maker required.  Just a couple of plastic bags, three ingredients, plus ice and rock salt.  Even the kids will want to help with this quick and easy method of making ice cream in a plastic bag.

Instructions
Step 1

Assemble ingredients: 1 cup of Half’n’Half, 2 tablespoons of granulated, white sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract.  Measuring out the ingredients into small containers works especially well if small children will be helping.

Step 2

Pour Half’n’Half, sugar and vanilla into pint-sized freezer bag.  Press out the air and seal the bag.  That’s it, just three ingredients.

Step 3

Place the smaller bag inside the gallon-sized freezer bag.  Add four cups of ice and a half cup of sea or kosher salt.  Rock salt works better than ground salt.  As in the case of the smaller bag, press the air out of the larger one and seal it.

Step 4

Either wear winter gloves or wrap a dish towel around the plastic bags.  Roll the bag back and forth between your hands.  The ice will melt slightly.  The ice cream will gradually harden.  This will take ten to twenty minutes depending on how hard a product is desired.

Step 5

Remove the smaller bag and quickly rinse away the salt residue with very cold water.  Dish up!  Eat as is, deliciously creamy and cold, or add toppings such as chocolate syrup, sprinkles, miniature M&Ms or cut up fruit.
