How to make s'mores

Everyone loves S'mores!  A traditional camping treat, S'mores combine food favorites: chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers.

Chocolaty, gooey S’mores have been around at least since the 1920’s when a recipe describing them appeared in a Girl Scout handbook.  S’mores are the ideal outdoor dessert, easily prepared over an open campfire, using only three ingredients.  None of the ingredients requires refrigeration.

Even children who are less than enthusiastic about outdoor living will take great pleasure in following these simple steps to make S’mores.

Instructions
Step 1

Assemble ingredients: graham crackers, large marshmallows and chocolate candy bars.

Step 2

Break a graham cracker in half and place a small piece of chocolate candy on one half.

Step 3

Skewer a large marshmallow with a long, thin stick that has been sharpened to a point.  As an alternative, use a metal skewer such as those used for kabobs.

Step 4

Hold the marshmallow above a flame or over a hot coal, just close enough to make the marshmallow puff up and brown on the outside.  Slide the toasted marshmallow off the stick and place it atop the graham cracker and chocolate candy.

Step 5

Place the second half of the graham cracker on top of the half containing the chocolate and toasted marshmallow.

Step 6

Optional... S’mores can be prepared at home in a microwave.

1.  Place a piece of chocolate candy and a marshmallow atop a graham cracker half.

2.  Set this on a small plate.

3.  Microwave for approximately ten seconds, watching carefully as the marshmallow heats up and expands.

4.  Remove from the microwave and top with the other half of the graham cracker.
